360Flex Denver

360Flex Denver360Flex is officially coming to Denver this year! I’m stoked because Denver is the second or third best city in the country. It’s going to be April 10th – 13th. Right now there are some good deals on tickets (if you buy before January 7th) so get them while they’re hot. It’s going to be a fun year for Flex with all of the devices coming to market and with people having had a chance to play with Flex “Hero” and Flash Builder “Burrito” (plus Flash Catalyst “Panini”) so this could be the best 360Flex in a while.

While you’re registering, you might as well think about speaking. They’ve opened the call for papers as well. See you there!

One More Day for FITC San Francisco Early Bird

It’s looking like FITC San Francisco is going to be awesome. The speaker lineup is bomber and the diversity of the sessions means that there’s going to be something for everyone. Plus the fact that we’re down in San Fran means you’ll get to see a lot of Adobeans in the halls. I’m going to be doing a talk on Geolocation and Mapping with the Flash Platform, a more in-depth version of what I did at Flash and the City.

The early bird tickets are available for one more day so definitely register soon and lock it in. You can spend the extra money on beer.

I was on a Boat – RIAdventure

Imagine for a moment being stuck on a boat for 6 days with a bunch of geeks. Then imagine you’ve brought your wife (or husband) into it. There is no escape (except for excursions). What do you think the result would be? That’s what I was asking myself before RIAdventure. I have to admit I was a little nervous but I had faith that because it was the Flex community it would be a great time. I was dead wrong. It was a FANTASTIC time and I got to know a lot of people really well, saw some great presentations, and my wife and I even came away with some “couple friends”. It was the ultimate blend of great community, friendly people, geeking out, and personal friendships.

My favorite talks of the conference were by Doug McCune and Greg Burch. Doug talked about his work on data visualization and took us through the history of “datvislashun” (inside joke) that he’s researched because of the Spatial Key project. It was a perfect high-level, thought provoking talk. I also learned a lot about “Slider” the Flex Mobile framework from Greg Burch. It’s amazing what you can learn about your own products when you hang out with the person who’s the lead on internal projects.

But the best part was the socializing. We saw some great (and some terrible) karaoke, hung out on the beach with Flex people, and got to know some new members of the community. One of the most interesting parts to me was that a good chunk of the RIAdventure attendees were “new” to the Flex/Flash community and this was one of their first conferences. It’s kind of a hardcore way to jump in so hopefully we didn’t scare them off.

Thanks to everyone who made it fun. For those that weren’t there, I highly suggest you go next year. Bonding with the community, getting to know spouses, and geeking out on some cool topics was a great way to spend the week. It was just a completely different kind of experience for getting to know people in our world and I’m really glad I went. Of course the next best thing is 360|Flex in March. Be sure to register!

2010 RIA Conferences List

Adrian Parr has a really great list of the 2010 RIA-themed conferences that have been announced. I’m hoping (and assuming) that he’ll be adding to this list as more conferences get added. There are a few on that list that I know I’ll be attending (and a couple I need to check on) and I’m looking forward to connecting with everyone. Hopefully Adrian will add MAX 2010 to this list when we announce the dates (hopefully) after this year.

Thanks for the list Adrian!

Writeup of the ActionScript Conference in Singapore

I’ve had a great couple of days here at The ActionScript Conference in Singapore (Flickr photos here and here). I had the first session of the conference and got to talk about Adobe Flash Collaboration Service. I had some good questions during the day and I’ve got high hopes for some cool AFCS examples coming out of Singapore. Of course the rest of the sessions were way better than mine. One of the things I love about this conference is the really amazing set of speakers. We got to see some multi-touch demos from Alvin Zhang, and during his session Andre Michelle demoed Hobnox, which is a fantastic use of the new sound features of Flash Player 10.

A few things that I learned during the conference:

  • FDT is really cool. Michael Plank showed off some nice productivity features. Might check this out.
  • Mark Barcinski is hilarious. If you get a chance to hang out with him at a conference, do.
  • If you come to Singapore, you need to hang out with Aleksandar Gvozden. Just don’t drink his Rakia. It tastes like gasoline.
  • I think Peter Elst has a loud, obnoxious side to him somewhere. And he also has an AIR Badge plugin for WordPress that I didn’t know about.
  • The Sonoflash guys are doing some great work at using the new Flash Player 10 sound APIs to make it easier to use sounds in Flash apps (video coming later).

It really has been a great conference. One of the things I love about the Flash community is that there are so many different types of creative people. We have sound guys like Andre Michelle, full on artists like Erik Natzke, video geeks, code monkeys, and everything in between. This conference captures a wide range of those types so you get a great spectrum of talks and some really engaging hall conversations.
