Flash Player Multi-Touch: Confirmation from Kevin Lynch

flash_multitouch

At the Adobe Analyst Summit today Kevin Lynch gave some clarity around Flash on mobile devices which included news that Flash Player for mobile will have support for multi-touch and accelerometer features. James Governor had the first tweet; which also included info about the release date, namely a public beta before the end of the year and release early next year, but if you’ve been following along you probably know that.

Having more native device capabilities on the phone via Flash is going to let Flash developers do some very interesting things. Think about the implication for games, video, augmented reality, and general application user interfaces. If you’re interested in the Flash Platform and multi-touch Daniel Dura is going to be doing a session at MAX covering some of the advancements in the Flash Platform and multi-touch. It should be an interesting session. Considering how creative Flash designers and developers are, I think this is going to be a feature that will get a lot of interesting use.

MAX Registration Open and Sessions Starting to Finalize

Registration is now open for MAX 2009 in Los Angeles from October 4th – 7th. If you register before August 31st you get the early bird pricing of $200 off. I’ve been involved with MAX this year as a camp manager and seeing how this all comes together from the inside is impressive. We’ve got a ton of content this year including a number of “BYOL (bring your own laptop)” labs that will let you get some hands on experience with the tools and technologies.

MAX is also a great place to come mingle with the community’s best and get a chance to talk with the engineers who make the products. There are also a couple of big surprises we’ve got for the keynote that I’m excited to see the reaction to.

Hope we’ll see you in Los Angeles.

Awesome Flash Demo from Japan

I had a great time seeing everyone at MAX Japan and our pre-event went really, really well. At the pre-event I got to see a demo of the FLARToolKit, another awesome library which is part of the Spark Project. It’s basically a shape recognition library that you can use in conjunction with the video camera. Check out the demo. Thanks to Saqoosha for showing it off (and creating the library)!

Getting Stoked for MAX Milan and Liveblogging

I’ve been on vacation the past week but I’m sitting in the Cancun airport waiting for my flight to Milan (through 2 other cities) and getting excited about MAX Milan. I’m going to be doing the Flash Catalyst keynote with one of the Catalyst engineers, Ty Voliter, and I’ve got a surprise for Flash Catalyst fans (you’ll have to come find me). We’ll also be giving out brand spanking new DVDs with Flash Catalyst and “Gumbo” for anyone that wants them, so it should be a good event. After the success of the MAX North America liveblog, a few of our other European evangelists are going to be covering the keynotes in Europe. Serge and Andrew will, of course, be occupied because they’re the keynote rockstars in Milan.

I’m getting in Saturday afternoon, so if you’re there and want to meet up for some jet-lagged drinks or dinner, drop me an email or give me a ring (+12672509422).

Serge and Andrew are Live Blogging the Day 2 Keynote at MAX

Serge and Andrew are going to be doing Day 2 Keynote Liveblog that should be a lot of fun. You can comment on everything they write so it’s a great way to share in the keynote festivities whether you’re sitting in the audience or couldn’t make it. This is probably going to be my favorite MAX keynote ever. You’ll see why.

Behind the Scenes of the MAX Keynote

I’ve been stuck in rehearsals all day but Serge stopped by and captured the magic of what’s going on behind the scenes at MAX.

It’s already shaping up to be an awesome event. I’m giving some folks a tour of the San Francisco offices tonight and then off to some socializing and talking about Adobe technology. We’re going to have a ton of surprises at this conference so I can’t wait to hang out and get the reaction from folks. If you want to hang out and tell me what you think you can drop me an email (ryan@adobe.com) or give me a call (+1.267.250.9422).

See you this week!

Preparing for MAX Europe to be Off the Hook

I’m deep in planning for my MAX presentation, Intro to Thermo, in San Francisco in November (and something special that will be a surprise). I’m lucky enough to also be presenting the session in Milan for MAX Europe. There’s going to be a bunch of cool stuff in San Francisco, but I’m also really, really looking forward to Milan. One, having it a couple of weeks later means that people will have had a chance to play with the technology for a bit. External speakers (which are usually the best) will be able to show off some really cool examples. It also means that some of the products that aren’t ready yet will have a couple more weeks of work. There may be a few surprises for MAX Europe that people in North America won’t get to have seen.

But first and foremost MAX is about networking and MAX Europe is going to be a great place to network. A lot of Adobe’s plans revolve around Europe. Europe’s always been big for Adobe and we’re going to be putting even more resources towards it than we have been. Europe has the largest evangelist team by quite a bit and we’ve ben expanding it with a bunch of great new additions. Some of the team will be in North America but in Europe you get a chance to meet all of them. They’re going to be the best resource for getting information about what Adobe is doing and getting your feedback back to the product teams.

So if you’re on the fence about MAX Europe, it’s going to be a great conference and I’m looking forward to showing off Thermo in my session, so register and add it to your session list.

My “Thermo” Talk at MAX

I’m giving a few talks in the next couple of months, but with all due respect to the 360Flex guys, the one I’m most excited about is my MAX talk – Next-Generation Flex Authoring: In Depth. I’m not a huge fan of the title (and it may change) but I’m going to be providing walkthroughs and demos of Thermo and Flex Builder Next. If you’re interested in how to use Flex Builder and Thermo to collaborate between designers and developers, you’ll want to catch the session.

And what’s even better is that it’s a Monday session. That leaves you the rest of the week to attend Serge and NJ’s session on Creative Design for Flex Applications. They’re doing a 90 minute lab/workshop deep dive so you’ll be able to jump in and start messing with Thermo. Between my session and that lab, you should be all set to Thermoize your life. MAX is going to be kick ass this year and I can guarantee you that between Flex and Thermo, MAX is going to be ground zero for really revolutionizing the designer-developer workflow. And we’ve got a few surprises with regards to the platform and workflow that I think are going to make people very happy.

Here’s to better looking, more engaging applications.

Here Early for MAX? Check Out the Bus!

The final stop of the North American on AIR Bus Tour is tonight in Chicago in the shadow of the MAX conference tomorrow. If you’ve flow in early for MAX, it’s worth checking out. We’re all pretty relaxed now that the tour is over and so tonight is going to be a fun nostalgic celebration of the entire trip. There will be a few good AIR sessions and I’m even giving the keynote. We’ll have beer, video games and the team will be up for talking about anything (especially college football). It’s a great way to kick off MAX, so swing by and feel free to give me a call after I finish the keynote (267.250.9422). Brutally honest feedback is appreciated :) .
