You may have noticed that a lot of us at Adobe are spending time talking about the BlackBerry PlayBook and doing a bunch of blogging. We’ve all been heads down testing content, building apps, and creating samples so when the PlayBook launches (and even before) you guys will be able to find helpful articles to build apps. The team I’m on, Kevin Hoyt’s team, has been spending a lot of time doing blog posts and I thought I’d share some of the cool ones. No matter if you’re a Flex or an AS3 developer, there’s a lot of great content.
- Mihai Corlan has a great post on working with the various List components in the QNX framework. He also has a very helpful post up about using the Flex data wizards on the PlayBook.
- Renaun, who is basically the PlayBook godfather on the Adobe side, has a ton of really great posts. Some of the best are using the QNXAudioManager, how to use the BlackBerry in-app payment API (money!!$$!$$!), and an optimization technique using Image and ImageCache in Lists. But really, his entire PlayBook category is worth checking out.
- Terry Ryan has a couple of good contrasting posts on building the same app, a Tivo remote, with the QNX Components and with Flex “Hero”. One of my favorites of his is a post about using ANT to package apps to multiple devices. Very helpful as more and more devices support AIR.
- Mark Doherty has a cool post up about QNX integrating the PlayBook with a car experience. They have a ton of expertise in the auto world, so it’s a great example of how Flash might be used multi-screen in creative ways.
- Lastly, for designer types, Paul Trani has information up on using the PlayBook’s QNX classes with Flash Professional and a fantastic overview of things to take into consideration as you’re designing for the PlayBook.
There are a couple of posts that Flex developers should definitely check out. One is by Renaun on using MXML with the QNX components. It’s a great example of MXML being more than just Flex and will be helpful for any Flex dev who doesn’t want to drop down to only AS3. The other one is by Mihai and covers using the View and ViewNavigator classes in Flex “Hero”. While not PlayBook specific, they’re incredibly helpful when it comes to building mobile apps. Piotr, another evangelist, implemented a version for AS3 and Renaun took it and turned them into QMXML components.
So hopefully that gives you a good rundown of what we’ve been doing. If you’re trying to find information on a specific topic but haven’t come across it, let us know, and I’m sure we can spend some time digging in and then blogging about it or writing it up for you.
