Flash Player 10.1 and Palm’s App Catalog

Palm made a bunch of announcements today about new products, their development program, and an app catalog. Palm was an early supporter of the Flash Platform on devices and member of the Open Screen Project so I was glad to see this tidbit in their press release:

Palm also demonstrated Flash content in the browser on a Palm Pre and expects a free Adobe Flash Player 10.1 plug-in to be posted to the Palm App Catalog in the coming months. Palm expects webOS to be one of the first mobile platforms to support the full Flash Player in the web browser.

That should mean that it will run on the Palm Pre as well as the new devices announced. Adrian did a demo of Flash Player 10.1 in action on the Palm Pre recently and you can check out the embedded video below.

Hey Ryan, perhaps you can clarify or find out from someone at Adobe if the Flash Player 10.1 beta for Palm Pre is still happening. It was supposed to have come out at the end of 2009 (the beta sign up page still says it will be available before the end of the year), but there’s been no new information about it since MAX. With the latest announcements from Palm, I’m wondering if perhaps the public beta has been cancelled (similar to Flash CS5) and that the first public release will be the release version on Palm’s app catalogue.

I echo Matthew’s concern… As of right now it seems that flash player 10.1 will simply hit handsets in its final form around late February and as such, no public Beta will ever occur. I find this to be very odd and I don’t like the fact that Adobe “lied to us” twice. It’s ok to not do public betas so long as you set expectations accordingly. It’s very bad in business to set false expectations :-(

Nonetheless, I’m really looking forward to an expansion of Flash on mobile, Android, and WebOS in 2010. These are among my 3 favorite platforms out there :-)

Ok, its mid march now and still no adobe flash avaliable for pre? Are we ever going to get it? I just installed the update for the plugin but no adobe avaliable?!

Hey Alina, it’s not out yet and I’m not 100% sure what the status is, but it’s still coming.
