Adobe AIR Certificates for Individuals Now Available

air_certificateThis happened last month but I wanted to make sure to get it out there for the new year and all of you who have “Write an AIR Application” as one of your New Year’s Resolutions. Chosen Security is offering code signing certificates for individual developers. Previously, the only way to sign your AIR applications was to start a corporation and provide proof of your corporation. Now all you need to do is to provide a government issued ID. There are more details on the process in this PDF document.

If you’re creating AIR applications it is VERY IMPORTANT for you to sign your applications when you release them to the public. The user knows the application they’re using is by the person it says it’s from, and it’s important for the AIR experience. Hopefully this puts code signing certificates within reach of more developers.

That’s great news. I’ve noticed a LOT of application do not sign the code. I would feel much more comfortable using them if they did.

$200 a year? I’d rather just make my AIR apps available from trusted sources – Adobe AIR Marketplace, Download.com, softpiedia.com, etc. I think that’s good enough for individual AIR apps that are free.

Well, I may be confused here, but I’m not sure this is exactly news to most of us individual AIR apps publishers.

I have a Thawte certificate, and never had to prove anything else than my personal identity (since as a freelancer, I’m not a corporation).

But maybe this is specific the US ?
