Why I Like Firebrand.com’s UI

Last week I posted about Firebrand and how much I liked it. A number of other Adobe employees said the same thing and then there was a pretty good post by Niels Bruin about why he didn’t like Firebrand. Normally I wouldn’t do this but I get the impression that some people didn’t like Firebrand for the reasons I liked it even though neither one of us drew it out specifically. Why do I like Firebrand so much? They built an application around the content. That’s the primary focus. You log in, the content is what you see front and center and all of the user interface spreads out from that content. To be honest, I didn’t even dig around the user interface that much. I didn’t care, I just wanted to watch commercials. The interface was clean and when I wanted to watch a particular brand it was easy to click on it at the bottom and jump around.

I think some of his complaints with the UI are off. Having more options on “big screen” mode is a UI choice and I agree with it. If I’m in big mode I want as little as possible. For the favorites they’re using the Apple UI paradigm of the plus which seems to make sense. The lack of tooltips is unforgivable but the icons do generally make sense. The other parts of his complaints I get. It is kind of a buggy application and hopefully they’ll make performance enhancements. But I still do like the user interface. It’s clean, it focuses on the content, and it doesn’t look anything like a Flex app. Those are all good things and I wish more applications thought about them.
