Yahoo Releases ASTRA: Set of Flash and Flex Components

Yahoo Releases ASTRA Flash and Flex ComponentsYahoo is doing really great things for the Flash community. Today they released ASTRA (ActionScript Toolkit for Rich Applications), a set of Flex and Flash components that are meant to compliment the components that shipped with Flash CS3 and the components of the Flex Framework.

The Flash components include some great things like a Tree Component, an AutoComplete component, an Alert manager, Charting and a lot more. The Flex components are a bit more niche but still just as useful with the addition of an IPv4 Address Input, Color Slider Picker and a Time Stepper.

Very cool… Looking forward to using these components within some of our widgets.

The Flex components are more niche because Adobe did such a great job providing the most obvious ones. Between the Flex framework itself, FlexLib, and various other components released by the community, it’s hard to think up useful new components!

That said, if anyone out there has any particular Flex components they need, we’re certainly happy to consider feature requests for the Astra Flex components. Send them to us on the ydn-flash Yahoo! group.

Hey Josh, hopefully I didn’t come across as niche being a bad thing. Because the Flex component set is so large, you have to branch out into other interesting components. So I’m sorry if that connotation wasn’t implicit in my using the word niche.

    Keep up the good work!

Thanks, Ryan. I didn’t interpret your meaning negatively. Since you specifically said “niche”, I thought I’d add a bit of explanation and point out how well Adobe did creating such a strong base of components for Flex. :)

So, if Microsoft follows through buying Yahoo, will these be converted to Silverlight? :)

I’m really worried that Microsoft is set out to buy Yahoo. Not good at all…

Anyone know any official statement from Adobe on this matter?

I was going to ask the same quiestion as Gareth :) Anyway, buying Yahoo off by Microsoft will surely change many things, hopefully for the better. ASTRA is really nice tool, I just started using it and it’s very satistying.
