Yahoo Japan Flex Version of Yahoo Mail

November 6th, 2007 by ryanstewart

Yahoo JapanWhile we were in MAX Japan the Yahoo Japan team announced that they were building a Flex version of the Yahoo Mail client. Yahoo Japan and Yahoo America are actually two separate companies so this isn’t an indication that Yahoo here in the states would move to Flex as their mail front end, but the Japanese team did tests and found that Flex was faster than the Ajax version so they built their own.

Yahoo Japan Flex Version of Yahoo MailThere is a news article here discussing it but I don’t read Japanese and the Google translation was kind of poor. They announced this at the keynote at MAX Japan but I hadn’t seen it in writing until now so waited to post it. In Japan Yahoo is the major portal for email, search auctions, and everything else. One of the buzzwords they used was a “Lifestyle Portal” which seemed appropriate after hearing how much market share all of their properties have.

I wonder how they are rendering HTML emails? Iframe overlays are clunky.

exactly what I inteded to do :( I have problems with Yahoo Mail everyday in different browsers
one click desktop solution would be great
hope it will spread on other languages and it will be released soon :)

I expect that any webmail client in the works would be done in Flex 3 where you have the HTML control.

I can’t wait for this to make it to the western world, the Ajax mail clients leave a lot to be desired. Hopefully the comparison between the two mail clients will be like comparing Google Docs to BuzzWord. That should see Flex really jump in popularity

I tried to translate the article with my poor English ;)
Atsushi Taira, Director of Marketing at Yahoo Japan revealed that they are developing web mail system based on Flash. They chose Flex 2 because of its performance compared with Ajax. The development of this application is almost completed, however the date of the release has not yet been decided.
