No more ‘click to activate this control’?

Todd Bishop of the Seattle-PI (go Seattle!) is reporting that Microsoft and Eolas have settled their patent dispute (Techmeme discussion):

Flash users will recognize this as the cause of the annoying ‘click to activate’ problem in Internet Explorer that hit all Flash applications that used the embed tag. Geoff Stearns created SWFObject which got around using the embed tag and as a result doesn’t suffer from the Eolas problem, but not everyone knows about it so people still run into the “click” a lot.

I’m not sure if this changes anything, but I’d hope that Microsoft puts out a patch for IE that reverts it back to the old way of embedding. If I get any more information I’ll update the post.

    good news for flex/flash devs!

    Thanks for the link Ryan

    Yes. This is long wished-for. Especially when embedding on blogs etc. it’s hard to use SWFObject.

    A quick note on the “undo-issue”: The full featured Scrapblog have the undo-option. One of the best RIA in my opinion.

    @Andy,
    Don’t know if you have used the Kimili Flash Embed Plugin for WordPress or Text Pattern but it uses the SWFObject code base, is simple to used and works great.

    I definately hope Microsoft can patch the IE explorer for the Click to Activate problem. I recently developed a series of videos clips in Flash and embeded them on some webpages. The fact that the user has to click once to activate the flash, and then click again to play the video is a real problem. Some people click once – nothing happens, and then leave.
