yourminis – Spanning the Entire Flash Platform (and then some)

TechCrunch is running a post today about yourminis, a company that a lot of you should be familiar with. yourminis is a product of the team at Goowy media who first came on to the scene with their Goowy webtop built entirely in Flash. It’s a great application and I used it for a long time until my email became too unmanageable and I needed things like mobile sync and offline access.

With Goowy they hit on the idea of creating widgets and launched yourminis, a flash-based widget platform that allowed you to create a custom flash page with widgets, individual widgets that you could embed on your blog, or desktop widgets with Apollo. They are one of my favorite companies using Flash because early on they saw the strength of the platform and how many different deployment options you could have using almost the exact same code base. The code for their widgets doesn’t change much from web to blogs to the desktop, it’s all basically the same Flash code but you have 3 distinct experiences for your users to choose from.

Recently they took that one step further and released the option to embed their Flash-based widgets in the Vista sidebar. It’s a cool, innovative use of the platform. For developers looking at Flash for their applications, yourminis is a good example of how far-reaching you can be with your code.
