Silverlight’s Streaming Video Share

May 9th, 2007 by ryanstewart

Last week Andy Plesser caught up with my editor at ZDNet, Dan Farber after he attended the MIX conference in Las Vegas. Like a lot of us, Dan was impressed and he talked a bit about the video side of Silverlight in an interview with Andy.

Silverlight’s developer story is quite good and saying its going to gain marketshare in the video world is a pretty sure thing. With Flash controlling almost all of the web video currently, there is nowhere to go but down. Dan’s take is a fun watch, and runs just a little under 3 minutes. He’s been in the tech world a long time, so it’s good to see what he thinks.

We’re in the middle of a big platform war, and as Dan says, regardless of who “wins”, using computers AND the web is going to get a lot more exciting. That’s something we can all agree is a good thing.

I think it says a lot about how far Silverlight has to go when you post a video about Silverlight up on the web in Flash format (rather than WMV even).

I wish people not say that Flash=Flex 2. This person should be talking about Flex 2. Also, Silverlight examples seem to be just the video portion of an application, but don’t talk about the ‘data’ or non-video portion of an application. The components of Flex 2 seem to be pretty good and have better performance (ie., grid) that JavaScript/JSON concerning populating the grid and sorting of the grid. I’ve seen the MLB example and I’m not impressed at all.
