Lee Brimelow on Silverlight

Silverlight Lee Brimelow posted a roundup of his thoughts on Silverlight over at the Frog Design blog. I’m not sure if its one of the places that people go to look for Lee’s stuff, but it’s a great article, so it’s worth reading and checking out. He cuts through some of the myths (Silverlight controls) and highlights some of the strengths (cross-platform CLR, Expression Media Encoder, ect).

I need to do a bit more checking to see what other people’s thoughts are now that the buzz has worn off a bit. Silverlight has a ton of potential. The developer tools from Microsoft are awesome, and now that people can use those to build cross-platform applications, it’s going to bring a new kind of developer into the RIA mix which is always a good thing.

Their design tools still have some way to go, but they’re off to a solid start. Expression Media Encoder is great, and helps make the video story for Silverlight top notch. The new version of Blend looks like it shores up some of the issues with the previous build and the designer-developer workflow between Blend and Visual Stuido is still excellent. Enhancing that and making it scale for big projects will be the trick.

As Lee said, some of the promises in Silverlight may be a *bit* early, which is what I’ve heard from Flashers checking out the product for the first time. That’s something to consider as you try and build apps with it.

personally, I think m$ needs to stop trying to ripoff everyone elses toys and fix all their own crap thats broken (like their os & browser), when they get done with that then they can go outside and play.

As far as their “cross platform” claims go…. running in a mac browser isnt cross platform.

And its hooked at the butt with .net and there are A LOT of people out there who dont want to use .net, they need to quit forcing people to be tied to their junk products to make their other products work. Take flex for example, you can run it with .net, php, cfm, perl, rails, etc…. Silverlight will run with.. .net.. joy… I cant wait for the day that you give you free frontpage extensions with that…

Lee, I noticed that thesilverlightblog.com is parked. Did Microsoft stash that for you when they were deciding the name? Or did some punk beat you to it?
