New Job, New Opportunities, Moving to Nitobi

April 1st, 2007 by ryanstewart

This is kind of a tough post to write, but something seems to be in the water, so I’ll take solace in the fact that I’m not alone. Starting next week, I’ll be taking a job with Nitobi as a JavaScript Engineer. I haven’t had a lot of good things to say about Ajax in the past, but at Ajax world, Andre showed me some of their components and I’m starting to believe that Ajax is the way to go. The things they can do with Ajax are awesome, so I’m excited to become part of the team.

Frankly, Flex was just too powerful for me. After doing Flex development for 2.5 years, the platform was just moving too fast. Being able to easily build interactive applications that incorporate rich media is a little too ahead of me. Ajax, with it’s 10 year old technology, is much more my speed.

Also, there is way too much money in Flex development. With mid level Flex developers pulling in $70-$85 an hour and the elite level devs making anywhere from $110 – $140 an hour, continuing to be involved in Flex would put way too much food on my table. I would actually be able to take that 2 week backpacking trip to Patagonia, fork over the $60,000 it costs to climb Mount Everest, or spend a month touring across Europe. With the way I pressure myself to keep this blog updated, the thought of having enough disposable income to take big vacations like that was scary. I needed to get into a profession that wasn’t going to put me in that position.

I’ll still be blogging, but I’ll be focusing more on how Ajax is the way to go. Tomorrow I have a big post about how the browser is the best way to deliver applications and then I have an announcement to make regarding a WebOS platform we’ll be working on.

Well I resigned today to work for Adobe, specifically I’m now in charge of Apollo.. apparently my poking and jibber jabba paid off and now they want me to run the show (Sorry Mike squareds, its just business nothing personal).

I’m gonna make Apollo now run on Windows Platform, and was thinking of calling it “Apollo everywhere”?

As I was reading, I started out being happy for you that you got a new job (if not a little perplexed), and rapidly went from disbelief to, well, anger! And as for the “earning too much money” comments, “Damn commie – I’ll give him a piece of my mind…” I muttered, as I pressed “comment” link.

Thankfully, others alerted me to the prank before I made an ass of myself!

    Ya got me ;-)

    Cheers,

    David

First, I wrote my April fools blog this morning and I’ve been waiting for you to get yours out – slacker! :-)

Second, I’ve seen your Javascript and you couldn’t make pocket change doing that for a living. Okay, that’s an exaggeration but I couldn’t resist.

    Third, . . . I can’t think of anything else but your mother’s a . . . okay, lets leave the SNL references out of this. :-)

BTW, the company name you came up with is perfect.

    Code on you jokester!
