Come Work For Microsoft! Err….Live in Seattle!

No, I do not have a job recruiting for Microsoft, but when I saw the Why Will You Work Here Campaign over at the Live Side, I had to share it. Why? Because Seattle is an awesome city and I want you all to live here. Tell me you don’t want to come to Seattle after reading this:

What is the Seattle spirit? Each neighborhood brings its own flavor to the melting pot that is Seattle. Check out the broad cultural atmosphere of Capitol Hill, the locally grown produce at Fremont’s Sunday markets or go back in time and enjoy the history of Seattle’s first neighborhood, Pioneer Square. And that’s only on the west side of the lake! Surround yourself with the gorgeous mountains and hiking trails in Issaquah, cycle your way through Redmond or join other art lovers at the monthly Kirkland Art Walk.

But hey, maybe Microsoft isn’t your thing :) . We have a lot of companies. Want to do Flex development? Check out Picnik or EyeJot, both very cool web startups. Flash? Well there’s Pluggd, Zillow and also a little company you might have heard of called Smashing Ideas. Plus we have the worlds coolest Adobe campus, so you can always work for them knowing your office is the best Adobe has to offer.

Okay, so maybe I was a little homesick while I was at 360Flex, but hey, it’s a cool site.

“Come Work For Microsoft! Err….Live in Seattle! No, I do not have a job recruiting for Microsoft”

    Man, that’s even faster than Gartenberg…. ;-)

(One more plus for Seattle: it’s the home of Filson Outfitters. Good coffee too.)

I visited the west coast a number of years back – San Francisco and Seattle – with the intention of moving to one of the two locations. Of the two, I preferred Seattle.

Now, I must admit that when I was in Seattle, the weather was fabulous. 80 degress for 3 days, and only a little rain on the 4th day. Great bars, restaurants, nightlife, etc.

It’s at this time, that I should point out that I’m from Ireland. Great bars, restaurants, nightlife, etc.

It also rains 280 days a year. Seattle, it is said, has more rain. There is just NO WAY I could voluntarily subject myself to that environment.

    Hey, can I telecommute?

    Cheers,

    David

Thanks for the mention of Eyejot. We’re looking for amazing Flex, Flash and Java developers. Located in Seattle’s historic, and delightfully caffeinated, Pioneer Square, we’re looking for pasionate folks that love to work at tiny companies with big potentials.

Can I get a little love for Bellevue? Downtown Bellevue is way better than Seattle. It’s cleaner, easier to get around in, you can park here, and there is far less crime. And you don’t have to sell your soul to live in an apartment with a view.

Firstly, workin for Microsoft is absolute fun – i went in thinking “Cut-throat evil empire” got there and felt like a disney channel in some parts ;)

Secondly, visited Seattle last month as Ryan knows (still haven’t figured out a way to hide that dinner bill lol) and I must say… I love Seattle.

It was cold hell compared to Australia at the moment but i still loved it – more so – I could only hazord aguess at how awesome it will be in the Summer over there

If I ever get called up to MS Corp to live, *hand goes up*.. count me in ;)

    @JD What’s Filson Outfitters?

@David The rain thing is totally overblown ;) Right now it’s a beautiful sunny day. It’s rainy in the winter, but compare that to shoveling snow in your driveway. No comparison!

@Daveid Geller I’m going to ping Daryn about getting together next week, I want to come see what you’re up to.

@oz I’m going to pretend that the world Bellevue never made it on my blog :)

@Scott It really is all about the summers. Perfect weather mate.

Ryan, I used your graphic in my post re: Seattle… let me know if there is further attribution necessary. Thanks for that.

Also, did you see that Seattle was listed as the 5th most “strollable city” by Prevention Magazine this week? It was featured on CNN. Manhattan came in #39. HA!!

  • http://blog.digitalbackcountry.com Ryan Stewart

No, that’s pretty cool! As for the graphic, I just sliced up the one from the MSFT campaign site, so I think if you link back to that it’s okay.

    Ryan,
I’m sure the rain thing IS overdone…but there’s alot of rain! I was surprised to find MORE than Ireland!

Seattle, WA averages more precipitation than Dublin, Ireland by 8.2in

When I was thinking of moving, I just remember my Dad saying “think about it…you want to go back to all that rain?” The man’s never steered me wrong!

Having said that – Seattle is beautiful, and outdoorsman’s dream.

    Cheers,

    David

People are right that the rain thing is overblown. What isn’t overblown, though, is the grey. I moved to Seattle when Microsoft bought PlaceWare, and there were a lot of things about it I loved – the culture, the food, the people, and so forth. If it was practical to split my year between two locations, Seattle would be my absolute first place choice for where to spend my summers. But the fall and winter absolutely suck – if you work in an office building you can easily go weeks without ever seeing the sun – dark when you get in the office and dark when you leave, and in between, its grey grey grey. Have you looked at the suicide rate?

My advice for those thinking of moving to Seattle: don’t do it unless you can afford a place on the water. IMHO it is the only way to alleviate the grey.

  • http://blog.digitalbackcountry.com Ryan Stewart

David and Andrew, you’re not helping me here!

Especially you Andrew, letting out the secret of the cloudiness. Sheesh! ;)

  • http://www.eyejot.com David Geller

Actually – due to our transportation problems and increasing cost of housing, it’s been standard practice for several years to let people keep their preconceived notions of Ark-like water conditions in Seattle hoping they wouldn’t discover the secret that for all but a few gray months it’s an absolute wonderland. This was especially true 10-15 years ago when their was a mass exodus from CA to WA.

Truthfully though, as Ryan, I think, noted – the Spring and Summers are quite unlike many other places in the world. Beauty with moderate temperatures. Sun – lots of it.

If you have pets, kids – love skiing (Whistler is just 5.5h N of Seattle; less technical, closer skiing just 60 min. outside of Seattle) then Seattle mind be your dream location. Same for boat and water sports. Great access to Asia and the whole West Coast too.

I really *do* know the difference between “their” and “there.” Sometimes, though, my fingers don’t. :)

You should check out the Doonesbury strip on living in Seattle. Annoyingly I can’t find it on the web and I read it today, in of all things, a newspaper.

  • Ciara Stewart

Dude, Seattle is the crummiest, rainiest city on the planet. NO ONE ELSE should move here. Our traffic is horrible, pollution is increasing, and housing prices are out of this world.

Now Philadelphia, THATS a city worth living in! The history! The culture! The architecture! The adorable 17th century cobblestone streets! The boulevards! The statuary! And it’s in the works to get free city-wide WiFi, making it soon-to-be one of the most wired cities in the country. What’s not to love?

  • David

(@Ciara – and I can pronounce your name properly!)

    “What’s not to love? ”

    …ummm, the murder rate?
