Apollo Developer Pocket Guide Already on Torrent Sites

March 11th, 2007 by ryanstewart

Apollo for Adobe Flex Developers I knew that Apollo was in demand, but I don’t think I quite realized how in demand it was. I got a tip about Mike Chamber’s book, Apollo for Adobe Flex Developers Pocket Guide, being available on Torrent sites and sure enough, the full book is available way before the scheduled ship date (which is supposed to be March 31st).

It’s been a long time since I occupied the world of the Torrents, and while I know everything is available, having it this early strikes me as pretty surprising. Excitement for Apollo builds in some very strange places.

    That is so cool!

The entire book is released under a creative commons license, and we will have the PDF for download on the labs site as soon as the Apollo alpha goes live.

now, I ask you in all honesty… how can this happen?

are you saying that O’Reilly run such a loose ship to allow this to happen? if so, we’d see this in books other than some obscure (in the wide world view) private alpha software.

or is it Adobe that is leaking like a seive? some employee not caring about the concequences of getting caught?

    or perhaps there’s another reason?

I just checked the download, and it is not the PDF that I expected it would be. It is a windows help file, which is a little odd, as I didn’t even know that we had it in that format.

Anyways, the PDF will be up on labs soon.

There are a few mistakes in the file so it must be before the proof readers got hold of it.

Mike impressed by your response :) impressed your not freaking out about it.

    WTF?

    @Erbill: Dude, get a blog.

@Ryan, I was the one who leaked the book to bitTorrent. I sat behind Mike Chambers at 360Flex and saw that he had the book open on his laptop. So I sat there and typed as fast as I could and got it all down. The pictures were a real bitch to recreate, let me tell you. :-)

Oh my God. Has anyone read Erbill’s entire post? I got through the first three paragraphs before starting to see strange swirling colors before my eyes and the unnerving feeling like I was being watched…by a pissed-off coyote that’s been antagonized with a Pikachu cattle prod. I had to stop.

Looking around on Usenet (binaries.e-books.technical) I’ve found that O’Reilley titles tend to be in Windows help format. Maybe someone has a program to grab them from Safari and package them that way?

i remember back in the day when flash mx 2004 came out and the activation was being touted all over the place, checking out how soon it reached the p2p networks and finding that most of the files proclaiming to be a serial were actually text files with macromedia germany (i think) saying that you have been pwned :)

also, if i’m correct, there was this fuss about users not being able to open fla files, which was actually a result of a bad crack. i let jd know about this and he cleverly instructed people to contact macromedia support to get help about getting flash to work :)

I know that the book is on the Bittorrent network(s) and that it will be available to download but mine is ordered from Amazon.
I like books… real books! And for $ 15,00 I think I can afford it.
So, what’s the point to have the book in CHM format?

… and I still have a collection of shrunken heads hanging in my cubicle to prove it…. ;-)

(btw, congrats Mike, on getting such pre-release attention… you’re like George Lucas now or something! ;-)
