revolUXions WPF Podcast – Cheesy but Full of Potential

revolUXions revolUXions released the first episode of their Windows Presentation Foundation podcast today and I’m excited for what these guys come up with down the road. The running time is a little over 8 minutes, and you have to download an EXE which contains a windows media file.  My big complaint is that they don’t have a version you can watch on the site, especially since “WPF/E” offers a great way to view Windows Media videos.

Now without a doubt, this episode is cheesy in spots and it’s kind of a rough cut. But having done a first episode of a podcast before, I know how tough it can be and I think this has enough potential to give them the benefit of the doubt.

I love the format. They do a screencast of what they’re talking about and in the first episode they show off some of the features of Expression Blend. One of them is a designer (Dax) and one of them is a developer (Andy) and they play up the different roles. Once they get more comfortable, I think this thing is going to be awesome and it’s a great way to show off some of the new developer tools. As I said, it clocks in at just a little over 8 minutes, so it’s worth the time.

I am going to have to agree with the ‘cheesy’ comment. Any podcast that asks to download and run an EXE file isn’t going to be watched by me.

On top of that even when unpacked from exe it doesn’t play under Mac at all (even with Flip4Mac WMV codecs installed). I finally got it to run under XP after Windows Media Player downloaded some extra codecs. They can forget about people checking it if they don’t release at least mpeg4 encoded version.

I have no idea why they did that, it’s silly. Hopefully the next episode can just be embedded right on the page. A downloadable WMV file is bad, but the EXE is even worse.

Yup, our bad, with all the other stuff we were putting online, we were thinking about compression and bandwidth before usability! It was actually much tougher than I thought just to get the screencast together!

    Sorry everyone!

We’ve rethought and have a better strategy in place for episode #2 — a downloadable WMV, and a WPF/E player (touch wood) — thanks for the suggestions!
