Flash Video Coming to Mobile Phones

It looks like at long last, video is coming around to mobile devices. Andy Plesser talked with Bill Joll, the CEO of On2 at the 3GSM conference in Barcelona about the possibility. Campbell Anderson has been talking a lot about this, and it looks like an exciting development for Flash people. Some of the details:

Beginning this year, Flash 8 and 9 files will be transcoded for streaming video to mobile devices.  News of this development will be announced next week at the 3GSM World Congress, the huge wireless industry trade show in Barcelona.

The new system for wireless transcoding is called Flix Engine 3GPP.  It will initially support the H.263 and AMR-NB 3GPP formats.  On2 has the exclusive rights to transcode Flash files.

Hey Ryan, the thing that worries me is:

“On2 has the exclusive rights to transcode Flash files.”

I worry that while enabling the larger content distributers one central stardard way to deliver flash video (80ish % of video on the web) to handsets, It kills smaller people like me as On2 previously have charged like wounded Bulls.

It all seems apart of some big Adobe master plan that is slowly unfolding in news releases. Verisign Peer to Peer in Flash media server, rumblings of Adobe IPTV application, although I am begining to believe more and more that this may have been some sort of a primer to possible applications. Anyone wanna make FlashIPTV….. Im in!!

For what it’s worth, I’ve got very little additional info at this point. I saw the press release on Thursday, and the quote from Francisco in there, but I waited for more info before pointing to it.

The Adobe Mobile staffers have been travelling to the 3GSM mobile conference in Barcelona the past few days, so I’m not sure when I’ll get some face-to-face for their perspective on it. There are usually other announcements at 3GSM, so maybe a few days will put a clearer context around it.

Re: “master plan”, I see it more as a goal, and many groups within Adobe trying different approaches to get closer to that goal — the goal is to make it easy for any thinking person to publish rich interactions, to anyone, anytime, any kind of device. There are lots of independent activities to try to bring this about.

I haven’t heard more of the VeriSign/Kontiki deal since it broke, but some more came out on the Antepo angle last week:

    Hey John,

Yeah thats the link I quoted in my blog.

“mobile handsets and embedded processors for set top boxes and other portable and mobile devices.”

Which is what made me believe the IPTV things flying around were more primers to what my be possible soon. Gazing into the cyrstal ball sorta stuff. Please keep us posted though!
I love how Adobe is crossing platforms. Great stuff!

Just when I was about to buy a new cellphone. Now I’ll have to wait. Does anyone have any thoughts on how long we’ll have to wait before getting FL3 phones in our hands here in the US?

Great question Oz, and I’m not sure If/when I find out more, I’ll let you know!

I was looking at the Samsung Ultra Smart F700 with gadget lust. Maybe it will be upgradeable to FL3, because I want it now, now, now. :-)

Ultra-slim Samsung U100 is world’s slimmest mobile phoneJust 5.9mm! Thats how thin the new Samsung U100 is. Whats equally impressive about the U100 is that it packs in a 3 megapixel camera, a 1.9 inch widescreen colour display, a fully featured media player, 70MB of memory and Bluetooth. It even has a TV output socket so you can view your photos and video clips on your big screen TV. Despite it’s amazing design and high spec, the Samsung U100 is a relatively inexpensive mobile phone and is available with 12 months free on a 12 month contract. From The Mobile Phone Man
