Windows Presentation Foundation as Windows Live TV

LiveSide pointed me to a new Microsoft project, Windows Live TV that is using WPF to create a 3D experience that incorporates Windows Live and Windows Media Center.

The screenshots look pretty cool, and I really like the idea of using the 3D interface to browse web content from your TV. I’ve been having a lot of conversations about Rich Internet Appliations in the living room and with the XBox 360, Windows Media Center and browsers in the Wii and PS3, there is a broad platform for bringing the web to the living room through a great experience.

The Official Live TV blog has some more info:

Media Center has brought the PC to heart of the home, adding Windows Live services to Media Center will make it easier to stay in touch with your social network.   Our goal in creating Orbit is to bring social networking to a new form factor that is both intuitive and fun to use.  We built the application in Windows Presentation Framework (.NET 3.0) and it will run withing Vista Media Center or directly in Vista hosted IE7.0 browser.

I expect they will fill this out with mail, search, maps, video (soapbox) and all the other live stuff. No XP support sucks, but it could still be powerful…

Live on WPF could be the killer app to showcase WPF, NYT reader is pretty cool too.

I like the MS app dev stack, but would like to see more mac support in Expression Studio (for designers sake).

I’m really excited about the blend between Live and WPF. I think there are some great ideas in the Live platform that could be turned into some awesome experiences with WPF.

I agree with you about the designer stack. Hopefully I’ll get some answers to that question when I’m down at the conference this month. I’ll be curious to see what you think of the Chicago version.

I’ll let you know how it went.
