3D Flash

I caught Lux3D, a 3D Flash engine built in AS3 over at Campbell Anderson’s blog. As Campbell says, it is an excellent specimen of the Flashious3Dhacium in all its crowning glory.

I think 3D is very important, and we just had a conversation about this over on my ZDNet blog. It’s awesome to see the community take up the charge of implementing 3D in Flash. With the performance gains in the new VM, quality 3D experiences could become a reality for the Flash Platform.

Great to see people like Campbell creating libraries like that. BTW: Here’s another one to keep an eye on; created by Thomas Pfeiffer:

Thanks Alex, do you know if there are any plans to port sandy to AS3?

  • http://www.flashsandy.org Thomas Pfeiffer

    Hi Ryan,
I’m Thomas the Sandy’s engine author, Alex pointed your article to me :)
Sandy is allready ported in AS3, but not yet available to the public. I’m currently adding some news features to the engine, and I need some time to think on the different optimizations that AS3 allows. Don’t want to publish a simple port.

John’s engine is very nice (!), but I always wonder why people don’t come to join a project like Sandy and help me to develop it, in order to have the best engine ever. When I decided to create Sandy, there was no maintained 3D library, and that was my main goal.
I’m looking for some help, even if nowadays I have some contributions, to make this engine and the documentation the most complete as possible.

Hope I answered your question :)

I do NOT think the 3D browser will ever take off because there are no reliably functioning 3D browsers out there that run on computer that have 1.8 ghz processors, like my computer does. Remember the Ford Edsel? Most likely not. I AM STICKING TO THE TRIED AND TRUE 2D BROWSER UNLESS THERE IS A 3D BROWSER THAT IS PERFECT IN EVERY WAY:

    1) EASY TO DOWNLOAD
    2) EASY TO SET UP
    3) AND EASY ON MY COMPUTER PROCESSOR.
