IBM on Technology options for RIAs

I just caught this great article on IBM on Technology options for Rich Internet Applications. It covers what I would consider more non-traditional technologies like XUL and Xforms, and the author provides a much different take on RIAs than I usually see.

I think he missed one important criteria though. In the comparisons, it should also list ‘Support and Documentation’, because while Laszlo is open-source, I left it for Flex because of the lack of decent documentation and support.

I thought it was ‘slightly biased’ towards Laszlo.

I’m no big fan of Microsoft but I would expect some mention / discussion of WPF / WPF/E in an article comparing the major RIA environments.

It’s also about 18 months out of date in it’s information on Flex (I asked the author and they said it was written some time ago).

That article seemed like it was published a year too late.

For instance, the Flex portion talks about ActionScript 2 and how a Flex server generates the swf Obviously, that is no longer case.

I also thought Laszlo handling DHTML was old news; as in you could already do it. They spoke of it as “something coming”. Isn’t it here yet? ( I actually don’t know, but I just assumed)

And, of course, I’m surprised to see no discussion of AJAX, instead focusing on DOJO, which appears to be an AJAX toolkit.

Perhaps this is what you meant by “A Different Take”

Good point Josh. Jules and Jeff, it was published late, and so a lot of the Flex info is out of date. OpenLaszlo just released (in beta) the ability to output DHTML, so that wasn’t TOO out of date, but the point is well taken.

What I liked about it (maybe like is a strong word) is that it went into other ways to do RIAs. After a year, are those ways even valid any more? I say no, but it is worth at least knowing about then and taking a look.

But why, some say, the moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask, why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas? We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade, and to do the other things, not because they are easy but because they are hard.
