A Day Without Flash

I got to thinking about what a day without Flash would be like, and it isn’t pretty. Maybe you can assume that other technologies would fill the void, but just sit back and see how pervasive Flash has become.

With the exception of Redfin and Zillow, these are services I use nearly every day, and I even use Zillow and Redfin whenever I’m looking at houses or doing real estate research. It’s amazing how important Flash has become to my daily workflow and my daily entertainment. I hadn’t realized it was so pervasive until I stopped to think about it. What about you, what would your day be like without Flash? Other than “I’d stay in my pajamas until 2:00 because I wouldn’t have a job”.

Until you’re forced to use a browser with the Flash player not installed, you simply can’t fathom how many sites, whether on simple or advanced levels, use Flash.

It’s just one missing plug-in warning after another. A nightmare.

And yet this how many people/clients work, day after day. They just keep pressing Cancel and never install the tiny file that would make their lives so much easier.

I wonder how many people don’t just install the Flash Player. Seems like it couldn’t be that many – it’s just so easy! :)

    Tom – I’m jealous ;)

Try installing the Flash Player on FreeBSD. It’s not quite as easy as installing a tiny file. In fact, it’s such a pain in the ass that I just gave up.

So, day after day, I live without Flash stuff of any sort. Even if I switched to Linux, I’d have an older version that wouldn’t support many of the newer uses of Flash.

Way to go Adobe/Macromedia. Awesome job.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day….

I have managed to read this blog post a bit too late I think, anyway I would like to add my opinion as a web developer.

I meet each week people or customers, willing to pay a lot to have their website dynamic. A presentation website needs to be attractive for the user, needs to go for guerrila marketing, needs to bring the visitor back on the website.

A simple website, a catalog system or an simple directory website are allright, but some flash elements are always welcomed. Also, today we have a real industry with flash games, so there is no point in mentioning how many clients ask for flash games ( there is doizece.ro – a really interesting game like blackgammon can bring you the visitors your target ).

Still, I also get the chances of seeing those kind of flash animations that are not so nice, talking charracters are sometime iritating.

But, in order to concluse, I can say that internet would not be the same without flash. And since SE anyway index their content … :-)

    Kind regards,
    J.Mihai

The majority of FLASH objects I’ve run across were advertisements. I finally got fed u p with it and uninstalled it. It’s amazing how nice and clean the web is without FLASH.

Oh, and I’m a web developer. I develop web applications that use xhtml, css, and dom scripting, wiht a few small images added in to pretty it up, but none of my applications need visual animation or audio, either.
